Doctor Who: Desperado

Song: Desperado
Artist: Ryan Kelly (Celtic Thunder)/Eagles
Fandom: Doctor Who (The Doctor)

Link: Here on youtube
Lyrics: Here

Oh you aint getting no younger.
Your pain and your hunger,
They're driving you home.
And freedom, ohh freedom.
Well that's just some people talking.
Your prison is walking through this world all alone.

Why: There are a lot of sentiments in it that I feel go well with the Doctor and how he operates. Each verse has a concept that I think fits the Doctor well, but the one above is especially appropriate. He's no longer a young man, he can't keep still and he wants to be free, but at the same time, he needs someone to travel with him - to love. And, at the end of the day, his burden ('prison') is to be alone, because none of his companions can last forever. A desperado is an outlaw, too, which is what the Doctor is to a lot of people he's encountered and foiled over the years.

Song: Un Homme Libre

Song: Un Homme Libre (A Free Man)
Artist: David Hallyday (French version of the song 'I'm Still Here' from Treasure Planet)
Fandom: Firefly (Mal in specific)

Link: Here on youtube
Lyrics: Here

Viens, il existe un nouveau monde
Où la lune est toujours blonde
Et les étoiles restent allumées...
C'mon, there's a new world
Where the moon is always bright
And the stars sparkle all the time
Ne crois pas tout ce qu'on raconte
Ce qu'on peut lire dans les contes
Si tu veux voir la liberté...
Don't believe what they say
Or what you read in stories
If you want your freedom...
Prends entre tes mains ton destin
Mets les voiles dès ce matin
Pour la planète où tu veux vivre...
Prends le large rien ne te retient
C'est ta vie elle t'appartient
Si tu veux être un homme libre...
Take your destiny by the horns
Set sail this morning
For the planet that you'd like to live on
Take the wheel, nothing's holding you back
This is your life, it belongs to you
If you want to be a free man...

Why: The song is all about freedom and escaping where you are and controlling your own destiny, which are all themes I think work with the crew of Serenity, but especially Mal. There's a line in the song: "so that you feel a little like a stranger/wherever you go", which I think describes him. The only place that is home is Serenity. He's made his own 'planet' there.

All Along the Watchtower

Song: All Along the Watchtower

Lyrics: Read more...Collapse )

I had this song on repeat as I was writing some fic, and I started hearing it as a conversation between the Doctor and Jack Harkness, with Jack as the Thief and the Doctor as the Joker. Jack works as the Thief since he was a con man at one time, and we know he stole at least one ship. The Doctor as the Joker... jester... the Doctor has always been a trickster character - "a god, goddess, spirit, man, woman, or anthropomorphic animal who plays tricks or otherwise disobeys normal rules and conventional behavior" – a character who can shine a light on the problems and oddities of a culture because he works from outside of it.

I hope it's okay to get this detailed! Character history spoilers for all aired seasons of Doctor Who and Torchwood.Collapse )

Song Nature's Dark Passion
Artist The Damned
Fandom Torchwood (Ianto)
Link on youtube

I've heard a refrain, it echoes your name
I hear it again, again and again
But I can't let it go, it's madness I know
This feeling that's churning and burning and tearing my soul

Why? This strikes me as the ultimate Ianto song - from the point of view that he's been overwhelmed by his unexpected (and possibly unwanted) feelings for Jack Harkness. It works for the end of S1, after Jack's little brush with Abbadon and his subsequent trip elsewhere.

Song: Wish You Well
Artist: Justin Hines
Fandom: Doctor Who

Link: Here on youtube
Lyrics: Here.

When you come back from the great beyond
With moonlight in your hair
I will meet you where that dark road ends
And it wont be long until we're there

And once
Once again we'll talk about way back when
Oh, but until then I wish you well
Oh, I wish you well.

Why: This song has always reminded me of the Doctor and Rose post-Doomsday, particular the last verse, which I've quoted above. The verses sort of go 'the Doctor to Rose' and then 'Rose to the Doctor' and then 'the Doctor to Rose' again, in my mind.

Song: Are You Out There?
Artist: Dar Williams
Fandom: Supernatural, more specifically Dean

Link: Youtube video

Why?:  I'm not claiming this is the sort of music Dean would listen to (though I haven't seen the fourth season yet). I just the think the content applies. I think the Winchester boys probably had a pretty lonely childhood, and this song is about a lonely kid finding a connection through music. I like to think Dean had an experience a lot like this. That there was a point in his life where he found all those cassette tapes he loves so much and clung to them, because they seemed to understand him.

Why not?: Like I said, haven't seen the 4th season, so perhaps the next DVD set will prove me wrong.

Song: Safe Place to Hide
Artist: Melissa O'Neil
Fandom: Firefly

Link: Here on youtube (a Harry Potter vid, but if you don't look at it, it's whatever you want it to be!)

Lyrics: Here

I was, always there for you
Always cared for you
And I'm still
Right here guarding you
Watching over you

And when you've got no where to turn
And you're all alone
When your walls are all breaking yet there's no escaping
And I, I'd fly through the night
To get back to your side
I will be your safe place to hide

Why: Because it reminds me of Simon and River's relationship (in a not incest way, thankyouverymuch) and Mal's attitude with every single member of his crew. I especially like the 'I'd fly through the night' line. And Serenity is definitely (mostly) a safe place to hide. ;-)

((First time posting here, hope I did everything right.))

Song: Everybody Knows (Except You)
Band: The Divine Comedy
Fandom: Any and all.

Lyrics: Here.

Everybody knows that I love you,
Everybody knows that I need you,
Everybody knows that I do,
Except you.

I told the stars above about the one I love,
I told the morning sun, yeah I'm telling everyone,
I told my mum and dad, they seemed to understand,
And I'll get through to you, If it's the last thing that I do.

Why: Because in the brightest, poppiest method possible, Neil Hannon has brought forth the distilled essence of longing and what it means to crush on someone and for them to not know it.

Song: Hold On, Hold On
Band: Neko Case with The Sadies
Fandom: Supernatural

Link: Here on Senspace.

Lyrics: Here.

The most tender place in my heart is for strangers
I know it's unkind but my own blood's much too dangerous
Hangin' round the ceiling half the time
Hangin' round the ceiling half the time

Why: Because Neko Case's voice is as well-suited to the twilight world of the Winchester brothers as anything I can think of. Because of the way the song shivers its way along and through your mind like the best ghost stories. Because, for how clearly the lyrics paint a story out of thin air, she might as well have been writing about Sam and Dean as anything else.

Song: The King of Bedside Manor
Band: Barenaked Ladies
Fandom: House, MD

Link: Here on Sendspace.

Lyrics: Here.

You know he's not the kind of man who likes to see the world around him
Crumble to a ball around his feet.
So he's always ready, he's always set, he's always well prepared,
he's the most peculiar man you'll ever meet.

You know he's not the king of Bedside Manor.
He's not the Tom Jones that lives next door.
He's not the king of Bedside Manor.
He hardly even lives there anymore.

Why: Because it's easy to forget how much fun the show itself can be, and it's nice to have a reminder. Because if this was a vid, the lyrics about the titular character being "quite a singer, quite an actor, quite some time ago" could be neatly fitted with Hugh Laurie's older work. Because it's as silly and cheerful as House himself can be, some days. Who around here hasn't laughed at least once over what he's got to say?

Strange Kind of Love

Song: Strange Kind of Love
Band: Peter Murphy or Chamber (my preferred version)
Fandom: Doctor Who (Doctor/Master)

Lyrics: Behind the cutCollapse )

Why: Basically the song screams the ship at me because of this verse

There is no middle ground
Or that's how it seems
For us to walk or to take
Instead we tumble down
Either side left or right
To love or to hate.

Other people might not take it in the same way, but that's half the fun of relating 'ships to music; you get lots of different opinions. further babble behind the cutCollapse )
